Congratulations, you’ve made it to finalist judging…but what are you going to wear? While there are no points given or taken away for attire, dressing appropriately will give you confidence when the judges come by with their clipboards.

The science and engineering in your project is the main focus, but you are also a salesman convincing the judges that your project is better overall than the person standing next to you.

What Not Wear

If you could easily go to a club with the clothes you’re wearing then you need to consider toning it down. On the opposite side of the spectrum, dressing like grunge is still is in style is also inappropriate. Keep jewelry to a minimum and keep it small. Remove any extra piercings that you can. While these are things that you consider a part of who you are, they’re simply not appropriate in this setting.

  • Jeans
  • Flip-flops
  • T-shirts
  • shiny or glittery shirts
  • short skirts
  • high heels (not only are they inappropriate but you will be standing for long periods of time.

Lots of perfume or body spray will make it hard for the judges to concentrate. Believe it or not, you can in fact put on too much Axe body spray.

What to Wear

Don’t think you have to wear a three piece suit. Dress slacks, a clean ironed shirt and comfortable shoes are the ideal choice for everyone. Wearing the right clothes means that you’ll be able to focus on judges’ questions; rather than worrying if you look o.k. Dress as though you are giving a presentation at a large corporate office.

  • Dress slacks or dockers (best choice for guys and girls)
  • Clean ironed shirt
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Jacket or a blazer if you have one
  • Ties for guys

Don’t forget to brush your teeth and use your deodorant.
