At I-SWEEEP, gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention medals were presented to top winners in the Junior and Senior Division in three categories (Energy, Engineering and Environment). From the gold medalists an overall Grand Award was selected for each Junior and Senior Category.
All four students who traveled to I-SWEEEP earned top awards at the Connecticut Science Fair.
In addition to her trip to I-SWEEEP, Theresa Oei earned the following awards at the Connecticut Science Fair: fourth place in the fair’s Dominion Physical Science High School category (a trophy), second-place Associated Teachers of Mathematics in CT and Xerox Mathematics Award ($300 from Xerox, a $200 savings bond and a trophy), Barnes Aerospace Applied Technology Award ($300, a trophy and a medallion), Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Alternative/Renewable Energy Award ($300 and a trophy) and Goodrich Award for Excellence in Engineering ($300 and a trophy). She earned a first-place Future Sustainability Award ($800, a trophy and the trip to I-SWEEEP) and a United Technologies Corporation Award ($500 in UTC Common Stock, a plaque, a backpack and an annual report). She also earned awards from the Yale Science & Engineering Association, Inc. (certificate, medallion and membership to the Connecticut Science Center), Connecticut Association of Physics Teachers ($100) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Connecticut Section ($250). She took home a first- place Excellence in Energy Research Award from Westinghouse Electric Company/New England Chapter of North American Young Generation in Nuclear ($100), a PowerPlus Engineering, Inc. Award for Sustainable Electrical Energy Research ($250), and the Arthur Mensing Award ($500).
In addition to the I-SWEEEP trip, Bridget also earned other awards at the Connecticut Science Fair, placing first in the Dominion Physical Science 8th Grade category ($300 and trophy) and earning a Connecticut College Physics, Astronomy & Geophysics Department Award ($150, certificate and shirt), an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Award ($250), a Long Island Sound Foundation Award ($500), a Society of Women Engineers (Hartford Section) Award (scientific calculator), a Project Oceanology Award ($100, book, two tickets and t-shirt) and a Meyerand Young Woman Scientist Award ($300). She also took home a third-place Associated Teachers of Mathematics in Connecticut/Xerox Award ($100 and trophy), a first-place Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Alternative/Renewable Energy Award ($300 and trophy), a first-place eesmarts/Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund Sustainable Resources and Practices Award ($500 and trophy, trip to I-SWEEEP), a first-place Goodrich Award for Excellence in Engineering ($300 and trophy), a United Technologies Corporation Award ($500 in UTC common stock, plaque, backpack and annual report) and a Connecticut Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Marty Tafel Student Research Award ($500 and invitation to CSTA award banquet).
The Putnam Science Academy team of Mehmet Sencan, a senior, and Abdurrahman Cam, a junior, earned first place in the fair’s Dominion Physical Science Senior High Team category ($250 each and a trophy) at the Connecticut Science Fair. They also received a third place Future Sustainability Award ($300 and a trophy). The team’s project, Environmentally Friendly Degradation of Toxic Phenol in Water Through the Use of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Obtained by Using Visible-Light-Activated Chlorophyll-a, also made them finalists for both an Audubon Connecticut & Arch Chemicals Environmental Award (medallion and an acrylic award) and a Goodrich Award for Excellence in Engineering Middle School category (medallion and an acrylic award).
