Report from Maya Geradi
I arrived in Houston, Texas for I-SWEEEP on Wednesday (April 27th) and was enthusiastically greeted by I-SWEEEP staff, who directed me to my room. After a bit of exploring in the mall, I headed to project registration and set up in the GRB Convention Center. I set up my display board and hurried to the opening ceremony. The auditorium was brightly lit, with the the large hanging I-SWEEEP globe being the most eye-catching. During the flag ceremony, I was simply astounded by the number of countries attending! I got to meet many new friends throughout Thursday and judging on Friday. I met people from California, New York, Texas, Vietnam, South Africa, Chile, Bosnia, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Judging was both exciting and anxious. The social event in the evening was very fun and full of pin trading with people from other countries and states. By the end of the event, I had pins from 16 states and 5 countries. We woke up early on Saturday and headed to breakfast at 6:00, looking forward to the trip to NASA. I was loading up a plate of pancakes and toast when it was announced that the NASA trip had been cancelled due to flooding! Despite the initial disappointment, I enjoyed the day shopping at the mall with some of my new friends. As 3:00 approached, it was finally time for the awards ceremony! We all headed to convention center and took our seats. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had received a gold medal! I was very excited, my happiness elating when I found that many of the Connecticut participants had received medals too! I-SWEEEP was truly an unforgettable and rewarding experience. Many thanks to CSEF and eesmarts future sustainability for nominating me.
